Purpose
To protect one of the few coastal wetlands remaining in the state and preserve a central California coast ecosystem providing a key linkage between the land and sea. The Elkhorn Slough harbors California's largest tract of tidal salt marsh outside San Francisco Bay providing critical habitat for more than 135 aquatic birds, 550 marine invertebrates, and 102 fish species. This site is also home to California's greatest concentration of sea otters, and provides a rich habitat for harbor seals and sea lions.

Regulations Summary
Restrictions
It is unlawful to injure, damage, take, or possess any living, geological, or cultural marine resource for commercial or recreational purposes, or a combination of commercial and recreational purposes, with exceptions.
Allowed
The recreational take of finfish by hook-and-line only and clams is allowed. Clams may only be taken on the north shore of the slough in the area adjacent to the Moss Landing State Wildlife Area.
