Emine

The territory of Emine supports 218 bird species, 60 of which are listed in the Red Data Book for Bulgaria. The rocky cliffs and the marine area of Emine are one of the few in Bulgaria where the Mediterranean shearwater regularly occurs.

Restrictions

According to our research, this site either does not have a dedicated management plan or lacks unique protection measures within the management plan or elsewhere in the country's legal system.

EU Council Directive 2009/147/EC requires member states to take the requisite measures to maintain the population of all species of naturally occurring birds, as well as their eggs, nests and habitats, in the wild state at a level which corresponds in particular to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements, while taking account of economic and recreational requirements, or to adapt the population of these species to that level. In light of this requirement, member states must take the requisite measures to preserve, maintain or re-establish a sufficient diversity and area of habitats for all such species of birds by implementing the following measures:
- creation of protected areas;
- upkeep and management in accordance with the ecological needs of habitats inside and outside the protected zones;
- re-establishment of destroyed biotopes;
- creation of biotopes.
Member states also must take the requisite measures to establish a general system of protection for all species of naturally occurring birds, as well as their eggs, nests and habitats, prohibiting in particular:
- deliberate killing or capture by any method;
- deliberate destruction of, or damage to, their nests and eggs or removal of their nests;
- taking their eggs in the wild and keeping these eggs even if empty;
- deliberate disturbance of these birds particularly during the period of breeding and rearing, in so far as disturbance would be significant having regard to the objectives of this Directive;
- keeping birds of species the hunting and capture of which is prohibited; and
- the sale, transport for sale, keeping for sale and the offering for sale of live or dead birds and of any readily recognizable parts or derivatives of such birds.
Member states are required to enact protective measures for additional species including species subject of special conservation measures concerning their habitat in order to ensure their survival and reproduction in their area of distribution. Such measures must also take account of migratory species and be coordinated with a view to setting up a coherent whole.
