Purpose
To conserve and protect the potentially sensitive (but largely unknown) deep-sea benthic fauna and South Georgia’s outer continental shelf which includes:
(1) the spawning grounds of many fish species, including mackerel icefish;
(2) a diverse range of benthic habitats and associated invertebrate communities.
Regulations Summary
Restrictions
The following activities are prohibited:
(a) bottom fishing;
(b) fishing for Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) from 1 October – 30 April.
Allowed
The restrictions do not apply to:
(a) anything carried out in accordance with a permit granted by the Commissioner; or
(b) anything done
- in the interests of the prevention or detection of crime;
- for securing public health; or
- for the purpose of saving human life, securing the safety of any vessel of significant value or of preventing damage to any vessel or cargo (in either case of significant value) from any danger which could not have been foreseen or avoided.
