Purpose
At the receiving end of one of California's major upwelling zones, this coastal habitat is home to humpback and gray whales, seals, sea lions, and elephant seals. The site preserves multiple habitats including exposed high energy rocky shoreline, sand and gravel beaches, offshore islets, surfgrass, and soft and hard substrates, and additionally protects diverse species of fish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Point Reyes, which hosts 45% of North American bird species and 18% of California's plant species, has been designated a National Seashore for its spectacular and biologically diverse peninsula.
