Purpose
For the protection, conservation, and management of the landscape, natural heritage, important national natural resources, and of the habitats of the Mediterranean seal (Monachus monachus). The Alonissos National Marine Park of Northern Sporades is the first marine park in Greece, and the largest marine protected area in Europe.
Species of Concern: Mediterranean seal (Monachus monachus), Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), spiny lobsters (Palinurus elephas), Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae), Audouin’s Gull (Larus audouinii), Mediterranean shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii), and seagrass (Posidonia oceanica)
Regulations Summary
Restrictions
1. In the entire National Marine Park, the capture of the species Palinurus elephas (spiny lobster) is prohibited year-round.
2. The passage of tankers carrying more than 500 tonnes of oil and any vessel carrying dangerous toxicants is prohibited.
3. Free camping and use of fire within the entire terrestrial area of the Marine Park is prohibited.
Allowed
1. Scientific research.
2. Trawling by commercial fishing vessels is permitted more than 2 nautical miles off the coast of Area B islands, and the use of purse seines is permitted at a distance of more than 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Area B islands.
3. Fishing with traps is permitted, in accordance with the existing fisheries legislation, with no more than 100 traps per commercial fishing boat.
