Purpose

To ensure the conservation of the only protected area on Haida Gwaii with a significant representation of all of Haida Gwaii’s three terrestrial physiographic ecosections (Windward Queen Charlotte Mountains, Skidegate Plateau and Queen Charlotte Lowlands). Some unusual geological features include Pillar Rock, Beehive Hill and Celestial Bluff.

Species of Concern: coho salmon, chum salmon, pink salmon, sockeye salmon, Dolly Varden, steelhead, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, stickleback, coastrange sculpin, slimy sculpin, marbled murrelet, steller sea lion, peregrine falcon

Regulations Summary

Restrictions

1. Commercial logging, mining and hydroelectric power generation, other than local run-of-the river projects, are prohibited in a conservancy. Other activities must be assessed to determine whether they would hinder, restrict, prevent or inhibit the development, improvement or use of the conservancy.
2. In accordance with the Park Act, a natural resource, other than fish and wildlife taken, hunted or killed in accordance with the Wildlife Act and fish, game or wildlife stalked or pursued for observation or for photographic or study purposes, in a conservancy must not be granted, sold, removed, destroyed, disturbed, damaged, exploited, developed, improved or utilized except as authorized by a valid and subsisting park use permit.
3. In accordance with the Park, Conservancy and Recreation Area Regulation, a park ranger may seize a firearm, bow, crossbow, fishing rod or other device used in a park, conservancy or recreation area to capture fish or wildlife if the park ranger finds that the firearm, bow, crossbow, fishing rod or other device is being used by or is in the possession of a person who
(a) is in contravention of the Wildlife Act or section 28 or 29 of this regulation, or
(b) fails upon request to exhibit a proper licence or permit issued under the Wildlife Act.
4. In accordance with the Park, Conservancy and Recreation Area Regulation, a person must not have an explosive or an explosive substance in a park, conservancy or recreation area except
(a) lawfully carried firearm ammunition, or
(b) as authorized by a park officer.

Allowed

Certain activities may be allowed in accordance with local laws.

The cultural heritage values in the heritage site/conservancy include opportunities for the ongoing continuance of Haida culture through traditional use of the area. Some examples of traditional use within Duu Guusd Heritage Site/Conservancy may include monumental cedar and cedar bark harvesting, seaweed harvesting, medicinal plant harvesting, hunting, fishing, trapping and food gathering. The heritage site/conservancy also provides a place for the physical expression of culture through monumental art such as totems or establishment of traditional style infrastructure such as longhouses.
