Purpose

The Pingo Canadian Landmark protects a unique arctic landform: ice-cored hills called pingos. Rising out of the flat tundra, pingos provide a distinctive backdrop to the community of Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.

Species of Concern: ringed seal, beluga whale

Regulations Summary

Restrictions

1. Panning for gold, mining, and mineral exploration is prohibited. It is illegal to remove, deface, damage or destroy rocks, minerals, and other natural objects in national parks and historic sites.
2. Fishing is not permitted in the landmark.

Allowed

Permits are required for the following activities and are available at the Parks Canada office in Inuvik:
1. Aircraft landings and take-offs;
2. Caching of food or fuel;
3. All research and collection activities.
