Regulations Summary

Restrictions

1. The taking or killing of any fauna within the sanctuary, or uses any explosive, dog, net, instrument, or other means for the purpose of taking or killing any protected fauna, is prohibited.
2. Any person who knowingly buys, sells, offers or consigns for sale, or has in their possession or control, a protected animal is guilty of an offense. This prohibition applies whether or not the animal was killed, taken, brought in, or received from a place outside the country.

Allowed

1. The taking of protected fauna is only allowed with a permit.
2. Traditional hand-harpoon methods to catch dugong is allowed from a canoe, whether powered by out-board engine or otherwise.
3. Dugongs may be caught with a net during the months of May, June, and July, or in the immediate area of Daru Island. The net size cannot exceed 25.4cm.
4. A dugong taken or caught within the Area may only be sold in the market at Daru after inspection by an authorized Wildlife Officer.
