Japan has sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, of these waters. Fishing restrictions, such as bag limits, seasons, and size restrictions apply. Please consult the local fishing laws, some of which are referenced on this page, for more information.
During the period from June 1, 2022 to March 31st, 2023, the following regulations apply to recreational fishermen who target bluefin tuna:
1. Small fish (less than 30 kg) are prohibited from being caught. If caught, it must be released immediately
2. The maximum number of large fish (30 kg or more) per person per day is one. If another is caught, the latter tuna must be released immediately;
3. The weight and sea area of the bluefin tuna caught must be reported to the Fisheries Agency;
4. Do not catch and release bluefin tuna during a catch prohibited period;
5. If there is a risk that the total amount of catch will exceed 40 tons, catch will be prohibited until March 31, 2023.
