Purpose

To conserve and protect the shallow marine environment around South Georgia including:
(1) the spawning grounds of many fish species, including mackerel icefish;
(2) the inshore foraging areas of marine predators such as gentoo penguins, cormorants, petrels and prions.

Species of Concern: Spawning fish species (various teleosts); Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua); Cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae); Petrels (Procellariidae); Prions (Pachyptila).

Regulations Summary

Restrictions

The following activities are prohibited:
(a) fishing;
(b) fishing vessels entering the no-take zones, except in exercise of the right of innocent passage or under force majeure.

Allowed

The restrictions do not apply to:
(a) anything carried out in accordance with a permit granted by the Commissioner; or
(b) anything done
- in the interests of the prevention or detection of crime;
- for securing public health; or
- for the purpose of saving human life, securing the safety of any vessel of significant value or of preventing damage to any vessel or cargo (in either case of significant value) from any danger which could not have been foreseen or avoided.
