Purpose

To conserve in perpetuity a sample of the Tropical Humid Forest ecosystem; to maintain the potential of natural, cultural and landscape resources; to protect the habitat of some endangered species of flora and fauna; and to promote the eco-development of local and regional populations.

Regulations Summary

Restrictions

It is prohibited in all the Río Dulce Protected Area Zones:
1. To develop industrial and extraction activities, including mining and oil, that affect the ecosystem of the Protected Area.
2. To drain human and toxic waste into river waters.
3. To cut mangroves and any tree species that cover floodplains, swamps or chaguitales.
4. The extraction and commercialization of wild fauna and flora.
5. Fishing with nets or gillnets in the closed season.
6. The hunting of animals of any species.
7. To inhabit, cut vegetation, extract material and build constructions on islets, islands and keys located in the Río Dulce and El Golfete.
8. Any activity not listed above that affects the ecology of the Río Dulce Protected Area.
The following navigation restrictions apply:
1. The entry to the Rio Dulce of vessels with drafts greater than 1.22 m and 36.6 m long is prohibited. Only in this way can the aesthetic character of the area be preserved and provide security to local people.
2. All vessels must have a fixed lighting system for night navigation in the river channels.
3. Visitors and locals must respect the established navigation channel, which will have a labeling system with buoys, which indicate the speed limits by zone.
4. It is forbidden to throw, dump or deposit any waste material of any kind in the waters of the PNRD. Appropriate sites for the dumping of oily wastes and hydrocarbons will be established in cooperation with the Municipality of Livingston. It is prohibited to discharge black and gray water into the waters of the PNRD intentionally or unintentionally. Yachts entering the park must respect the marking to seal the sanitary warehouses and use sanitary services allowed on land.
5. It is only allowed to use jet skis in waters of El Golfete and Lake Izabal, outside the buffer zone of 200 meters measured from the river bank.
6. Compliance with these navigation regulations will be in charge of the Caribbean Naval Command with the logistical support of the PNRD administration.
