The reserve is a hub of activity, with programs promoting education, research, and conservation in Elkhorn Slough. Additionally, the area harbors the largest tract of tidal salt marsh in California outside of the San Francisco Bay, providing much-needed habitat for hundreds of species of plants, animals, and birds.
